Texas Level II Security Course – FAQ

General Information

The Level II Security Course is the state-required basic training for non-commissioned (unarmed) security officers in Texas. It covers the legal aspects of security, the role of a guard, emergency response, and professionalism.
Anyone who wants to work as a non-commissioned (unarmed) security guard in Texas must complete the Level II course and obtain a license from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Private Security Bureau (PSB).

Course Details

The course is typically 6–8 hours in length and can be completed in one day.

Our course is completely online and is self-paced. Each page has a minimum time that must be met in order to proceed to the next page starting at page 10. This is in compliance with the minimum hourly requirement to become a level two security guard in the state of Texas.
Yes. At the end of the course, you’ll complete a short exam to demonstrate your understanding of the material.

Licensing & Requirements

You must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have no disqualifying criminal history
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States
No, Texas does not require a diploma or GED to enroll in the Level II course.
You will receive a certificate of completion, which you can submit with your application to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to obtain your security license.
No. You must still apply to DPS/PSB for your license. Our course provides the required training certificate to include in your application.

Your certificate does not expire, but you must remain licensed with the state to legally work as a guard.
Yes. After completing Level II and becoming licensed, you may enroll in the Level III Commissioned (Armed) Security Officer Course if you wish to carry a firearm on duty.
Yes. Many security companies will only hire applicants who already have their Level II certificate, as it speeds up the licensing process.
Yes. Your training certificate is valid statewide and can be used with any licensed security company in Texas.
